Thunderwave

  • casting time 1 action
  • range Self (15-foot cube)

  • components V, S
  • duration Instantaneous

(There's a loud book but please be brave, I just cast a spell called Thunderwave!) A wave of thunderous force sweeps out from you. Each creature in a 15-foot cube originating from you must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 2d8 thunder damage and is pushed 10 feet away from you. On a successful save, the creature takes half as much damage and isn't pushed.

In addition, unsecured objects that are completely within the area of effect are automatically pushed 10 feet away from you by the spell's effect, and the spell emits a thunderous boom audible out to 300 feet.

Wizard Hat Evocation

Earth Tremor

  • casting time 1 action
  • range 10 feet

  • components V, S
  • duration Instantaneous

You feel the ground begin to shake, the Earth Tremor begins to quake!

You cause a tremor in the ground within range. Each creature other than you in that area must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 1d6 bludgeoning damage and is knocked prone. If the ground in that area is loose earth or stone, it becomes difficult terrain until cleared, with each 5-foot-diameter portion requiring at least 1 minute to clear by hand.

Wizard Hat Evocation

Fog Cloud

  • casting time 1 action
  • range 120 feet

  • components V, S
  • duration Concentration, up to 1 hour

If you need to escape a big crowd, disappear into a Fog Cloud!

You create a 20-foot-radius sphere of fog centered on a point within range. The sphere spreads around corners, and its area is heavily obscured. It lasts for the duration or until a wind of moderate or greater speed (at least 10 miles per hour) disperses it.

Wizard Hat Conjuration

Charm Person

  • casting time 1 action
  • range 30 feet

  • components V, S
  • duration 1 hour

Charm Person! Now you're my friend! Well at least until this spell ends!

You attempt to charm a humanoid you can see within range. It must make a Wisdom saving throw, and does so with advantage if you or your companions are fighting it. If it fails the saving throw, it is charmed by you until the spell ends or until you or your companions do anything harmful to it. The charmed creature regards you as a friendly acquaintance. When the spell ends, the creature knows it was charmed by you.

Wizard Hat Enchantment

Expeditious Retreat

  • casting time 1 bonus action
  • range Touch

  • components V, S
  • duration Concentration, up to 10 minutes

(Quick! Hurry! Get on your feet! We're going to go fast with Expeditious Retreat!) This spell allows you to move at an incredible pace. When you cast this spell, and then as a bonus action on each of your turns until the spell ends, you can take the Dash action.

Wizard Hat Transmutation

Distort Value

  • casting time 1 minute
  • range Touch

  • components V
  • duration 8 hours

(Give me a better price shall you? Let's try again with Distort Value!) Do you need to squeeze a few more gold pieces out of a merchant as you try to sell that weird octopus statue you liberated from the chaos temple? Do you need to downplay the worth of some magical assets when the tax collector stops by? Distort Value has you covered.

You cast this spell on an object no more than 1 foot on a side, doubling the object's perceived value by adding illusory flourishes or polish to it, or reducing its perceived value by half with the help of illusory scratches, dents, and other unsightly features. Anyone examining the object can ascertain its true value with a successful Intelligence (Investigation) check against your spell save DC.

At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the maximum size of the object increases by 1 foot for each slot level above 1st.

Wizard Hat Illusion

Absorb Elements

  • casting time 1 reaction
  • range Self

  • components S
  • duration 1 round

(Absorb Elements please protect thee from the asshole trying to blast me!) The spell captures some of the incoming energy, lessening its effect on you and storing it for your next melee attack. You have resistance to the triggering damage type until the start of your next turn. Also, the first time you hit with a melee attack on your next turn, the target takes an extra 1d6 damage of the triggering type, and the spell ends.

1 reaction, which you take when you take acid, cold, fire, lightning, or thunder damage

Wizard Hat Abjuration

Cause Fear

  • casting time 1 action
  • range 60 feet

  • components V
  • duration Concentration, up to 1 minute

(So scared! Oh my! Oh dear! Just in time to use Cause Fear!) You awaken the sense of mortality in one creature you can see within range. A construct or an undead is immune to this effect. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or become frightened of you until the spell ends. The frightened target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Wizard Hat Necromancy

Burning Hands

  • casting time 1 action
  • range Self (15-foot cone)

  • components V, S
  • duration Instantaneous

(I don't need no oil cans, I've got me some burning hands!) As you hold your hands with thumbs touching and fingers spread, a thin sheet of flames shoots forth from your outstretched fingertips. Each creature in a 15-foot cone must make a Dexterity saving throw. A creature takes 3d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

The fire ignites any flammable objects in the area that aren't being worn or carried.

Color Spray

  • casting time 1 action
  • range Self (15-foot cone)

  • components V, S, M
  • duration 1 round

Get ready for a dazzling array once I use this Color Spray!

A dazzling array of flashing, colored light springs from your hand. Roll 6d10, the total is how many hit points of creatures this spell can effect. Creatures in a 15-foot cone originating from you are affected in ascending order of their current hit points (ignoring unconscious creatures and creatures that can't see).

Starting with the creature that has the lowest current hit points, each creature affected by this spell is blinded until the end of your next turn. Subtract each creature's hit points from the total before moving on to the creature with the next lowest hit points. A creature's hit points must be equal to or less than the remaining total for that creature to be affected.

Wizard Hat Illusion

Disguise Self

  • casting time 1 action
  • range Self

  • components V, S
  • duration 1 hour

(I once saw a picture of a boy on a shelf, I have now become him using disguise self!) You make yourself — including your clothing, armor, weapons, and other belongings on your person — look different until the spell ends or until you use your action to dismiss it. You can seem 1 foot shorter or taller and can appear thin, fat, or in between. You can't change your body type, so you must adopt a form that has the same basic arrangement of limbs. Otherwise, the extent of the illusion is up to you.

The changes wrought by this spell fail to hold up to physical inspection. For example, if you use this spell to add a hat to your outfit, objects pass through the hat, and anyone who touches it would feel nothing or would feel your head and hair. If you use this spell to appear thinner than you are, the hand of someone who reaches out to touch you would bump into you while it was seemingly still in midair.

To discern that you are disguised, a creature can use its action to inspect your appearance and must succeed on an Intelligence (Investigation) check against your spell save DC.

Wizard Hat Illusion

Ray of Sickness

  • casting time 1 action
  • range 60 feet

  • components V, S
  • duration Instantaneous

(When Ray of Sickness hits, you'll feel like you've got the shits!) A ray of sickening greenish energy lashes out toward a creature within range. Make a ranged spell attack against the target. On a hit, the target takes 2d8 poison damage and must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, it is also poisoned until the end of your next turn.

Wizard Hat Necromancy

Detect Magic

  • casting time 1 action
  • range Self

  • components V, S
  • duration Concentration, up to 10 minutes

(Detect magic helps me see, no magic funny business can find from me!) For the duration, you sense the presence of magic within 30 feet of you. If you sense magic in this way, you can use your action to see a faint aura around any visible creature or object in the area that bears magic, and you learn its school of magic, if any.

The spell can penetrate most barriers, but it is blocked by 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood or dirt.

Wizard Hat Divination

Catapult

  • casting time 1 action
  • range 60 feet

  • components S
  • duration Instantaneous

(My Catapult and you are about to race, if you lose it will hit your face!) Choose one object weighing 1 to 5 pounds within range that isn't being worn or carried. The object flies in a straight line up to 90 feet in a direction you choose before falling to the ground, stopping early if it impacts against a solid surface. If the object would strike a creature, that creature must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, the object strikes the target and stops moving. When the object strikes something, the object and what it strikes each take 3d8 bludgeoning damage.

Wizard Hat Transmutation

Magic Missile

  • casting time 1 action
  • range 120 feet

  • components V, S
  • duration Instantaneous

(Once this Magic Missile starts, you're going to be hit by darts!) You create three glowing darts of magical force. Each dart hits a creature of your choice that you can see within range. A dart deals 1d4 + 1 force damage to its target. The darts all strike simultaneously, and you can direct them to hit one creature or several.

Wizard Hat Evocation

Presto's Magic Missile

  • casting time 1 action
  • range 60 feet

  • components V, S, R (1 gp)
  • duration Instantaneous

(Heading your way are three little darts, It's Presto's Magic Missile so it's going to sound like farts!) Any apprentice wizard can cast a boring old Magic Missile. Sure, it always strikes its target. Yawn. Do away with the drudgery of your grandfather's magic with this improved version of the spell, as used by Presto Majesto!

You create three twisting, whistling, hypoallergenic, gluten-free darts of magical force. Each dart targets a creature of your choice that you can see within range. Make a ranged spell attack for each missile. On a hit, a missile deals 2d4 force damage to its target.

If the attack roll scores a critical hit, the target of that missile takes 5d4 force damage instead of you rolling damage twice for a critical hit. If the attack roll for any missile is a 1, all missiles miss their targets and blow up in your face, dealing 1 force damage per missile to you.

Wizard Hat Evocation

Sudden Awakening

  • casting time 1 bonus action
  • range 10 feet

  • components V
  • duration Instantaneous

(Rise and shine, Sudden Awakening will make everything fine!) Each sleeping creature you choose within range awakens, and then each prone creature within range can stand up without expending any movement.

Wizard Hat Enchantment

Magnify Gravity

  • casting time 1 action
  • range 60 feet

  • components V, S
  • duration 1 round

(Maginify Gravity has things all topsy-turvy, it's going to make you feel a little nervy!) The gravity in a 10-foot-radius sphere centered on a point you can see within range increases for a moment. Each creature in the sphere on the turn when you cast the spell must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 2d8 force damage, and its speed is halved until the end of its next turn. On a successful save, a creature takes half as much damage and suffers no reduction to its speed.

Until the start of your next turn, any object that isn't being worn or carried in the sphere requires a successful Strength check against your spell save DC to pick up or move.

Puppet

  • casting time 1 action
  • range 120 feet

  • components S
  • duration Instantaneous

(You're a Puppet, I've got you on strings. Move over there and drop all of your things!) Your gesture forces one humanoid you can see within range to make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the target must move up to its speed in a direction you choose. In addition, you can cause the target to drop whatever it is holding. This spell has no effect on a humanoid that is immune to being charmed.

Wizard Hat Enchantment

Protection From Evil and Good

  • casting time 1 action
  • range Touch

  • components V, S, M (holy water or powdered silver and iron, which the spell consumes)
  • duration Concentration, up to 10 minutes

You aren't messing with my friends until this Protection From Evil and Good ends!

Until the spell ends, one willing creature you touch is protected against certain types of creatures: aberrations, celestials, elementals, fey, fiends, and undead.

The protection grants several benefits. Creatures of those types have disadvantage on attack rolls against the target. The target also can't be charmed, frightened, or possessed by them. If the target is already charmed, frightened, or possessed by such a creature, the target has advantage on any new saving throw against the relevant effect.
